Live and unplugged (a dogme lesson and discussion)

Following on from the success of the first live lesson, taught by Luke Meddings and Scott Thornbury at the Unplugged TDSIG conference in Barcelona (May 2011) Luke Meddings brings a live dogme lesson (and seminar) to the British Council.

The class will be a group of intermediate level English language learners brought from local schools into a working classroom setting. This will not simply be a demonstration of a recent lesson, but a live lesson rooted in interaction with the learners and in conversation about their lives and current events. Luke will put dogme methodology into practice, asking students to answer questions, note words and structures as they emerge, helping learners to refine their language as they work on a variety of task types, written and spoken. We invite you to observe and contribute.

This session will give the opportunity not only to see some core dogme tasks in action, but also to gain a sense of the ‘flow’ within an unplugged lesson – between tasks, between participants (teacher and learners) and between phases of interaction and instruction. The live lesson will be followed by a discussion.

Videotelling

In this presentation, Jamie shares a classroom technique which brings storytelling to the YouTube generation. We will make use of stories that have been born out of the social media – more specifically, stories which owe their existence to videosharing culture. We will consider storytelling devices and language practice techniques that will allow teachers to turn a storytelling session into a whole-class communicative event.
